Overview
In cold weather the original Odyssey PC680 battery had difficulty starting the ‘Star’s engine. The PC680 and a small backup battery used to power the electric system were replaced with a single high-capacity Odyssey Extreme Racing (ER) 30 battery, yet with negligible weight gain.* After the ER 30 was installed, the ’Star’s jumper cables have gone unused.
Description
The Odyssey ER 30 battery provides excellent starting power and massive deep cycle reserve power. Conventional batteries provide either good reserve power or good cranking power. The ER 30 battery is revolutionary as it is designed to provide both.
The ER 30’s plates are made from 99.99% pure virgin lead. Pure lead plates can be made thinner than standard plates, so more plates can be fitted into the battery case. With a greater surface area, the ER 30 produces almost twice as much power as the PC680. Odyssey suggests that the ER 30 is capable of providing engine cranking pulses in excess of 2,250 amps for 5 seconds.
Rugged construction and tightly packed with pure lead plates, the Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) design protects against vibration.
According to Odyssey, the ER 30 can be stored unconnected on an open circuit for up to two years without charging, and a 100% charge can be reached within 4-6 hours. (Note that the ER 30 must only be charged with a battery charger designed for AGM batteries.) The ER 30 offers a 70% longer cycle life than a conventional battery and a three to 10 year service life.
* Wiring for the backup battery remains unmodified and in place for future use.
